Emergency Winter Shelter (EWS)
The Emergency Winter Shelter (EWS) in Arlington is a hypothermia shelter that is open from November 1 through March 31 every year. This past year, the capacity of the shelter was expanded from 44 to 56 beds, and on many nights, an additional 18 people slept on mats in an overflow section. Additional shelter is available for 15 people through extended overflow at another shelter location.
The EWS is open from 4 PM to 9 AM. On days when the temperature remains below freezing, the shelter stays open throughout the day.
Case management, mental health, and substance abuse services and meals are available to shelter guests. Case managers link shelter guests to alternative year round emergency shelters as well as transitional and permanent housing programs. They assist guests with dental and medical referrals. A-SPAN's Employment Coordinator assists individuals seeking stable employment. Mental health and substance abuse therapists are available through our partnership with Arlington County's Treatment on Wheels program. Next shelter season, a nurse will be available to clients at the shelter through the EWS Nursing Program.
The EWS is located at: 2049 N. 15th Street near the courthouse in Arlington. The number for the EWS is 703-228-7395.
